Sprinkler System Climate Sensors

Protect Sprinklers From Rain, Wind and Freezing Temperatures

Sprinkler Maintenance & RepairOne of the most important issues for a properly functioning sprinkler system is timing. But timing is more than setting a clock; it’s also coordinating your sprinklers with environmental conditions such as rainfall, wind speed or air temperature. That’s why Andy’s provides top quality climate sensors.

By measuring moisture, wind speed and air temperature, climate sensors can determine when sprinklers should be automatically turned off. If the ground is already moist from rain, or if high winds threaten to blow spraying water off your property, shut-off modes automatically activate. Automated shutdown helps you save money on your water bill and stops wasting water.

You’re not just wasting water and needlessly running up your monthly water bill if your sprinkler system is running during a rain storm. In addition, overwatering can lead to excess run off, which can wash out flower beds and cause root rot from over saturated soil.

Now you might think it’s easy to just go out and shut off your system before it rains, but what happens when you forget to turn it back on, or you have to be away for an extended period of time? Don’t try to cut corners and deprive your lawn of the water it needs. Andy’s Sprinklers has the solution.

How Do Climate Sensors Work?

climate sensor, sprinkler system repair, rain gaugeOur sprinkler system technicians can easily install a sprinkler climate sensor on any automatic irrigation system and have it working properly within minutes. As rainfall occurs, there are small disks inside the sensor that expand according to the amount of rain detected. This expansion of the disk activates an internal switch that shuts off sprinklers during a storm and keeps them off. A quick burst of rain in a short period won’t keep the sprinklers off for very long, but a continual downpour will keep your system off until the disks finally dry out.

After the disks are completely dry, they contract back to normal size, which releases the switch. Just think how much money you will save with such a brilliant piece of technology housed in such a small device!

Your weather sensor will continue to operate for quite some time, automatically resetting itself, never affecting your controller. Andy’s Sprinklers installs only the best climate sensors, built to withstand the harsh Texas summers and freezing winters.

Freeze Detectors Prevent Damage

The freeze detectors on these sensors also provide a safety feature for both commercial and residential properties. Sprinkler systems that are allowed to run during extremely cold weather can cover delicate plants and shrubbery in ice. Just one cycle of your sprinkler system during freezing weather can cause thousands of dollars in damage to landscaping. More seriously, water spray and runoff can cause ice to form on sidewalks and in the street, leading to slips, falls and fender benders.

Those are just some of the reasons that have led many Texas cities to require homeowners to have climate sensors on their sprinkler systems. Without a climate control unit, you may face fines in your area.
