Buda, TX, started out as an agricultural community dominated by dairy farming. Today it is a successful suburb populated by many who work in nearby Austin. The town was first named Du Pre, possibly from French for “of the meadow” or it may have come from a local postmaster’s request to the railroad “do, pray, give us a depot.” The name was changed to Buda to acknowledge many locals who originated from Hungary. A notorious bank robbery occurred here when a 22-year-old female University of Texas student got away with $1,000. She was captured later that night, but no jury would convict the young girl, nicknamed the “flapper bandit.”
