Helotes, TX lies along State Highway 16 just 16 miles northwest of downtown San Antonio. It was first settled in 1856 by Mexican and Native American descendants. Reportedly, the first man to build a house and cultivate a cornfield here may be responsible for the town’s name, which means “green roasting ear of corn” or “corn on the cob” in Spanish. Today, there are approximately 7,960 residents.
The community offers scenic Hill Country surroundings, nature trails, businesses, retail shops, master-planned communities, easy access to the San Antonio airport, and a top-rated public school system. The local dance hall, the John T. Floore Country Store, is listed in the National Register of Historic Places and is a Texas Historic Landmark that draws top musical talent to its stages.
